Warning: This Presidents' Day Post is from the point of view of a Liberal Humanist mom living in New York.
No matter your preferred political party the oval office should be worthy of our respect and filled with elected officials that are working for the people. That is the key phrase, FOR THE PEOPLE. Are you confident this administration is trying to better the lives of majority of Americans? Are they uniting the people? Are they providing more healthcare, education, and jobs? Do you think they are empathetic and compassionate?
I want to emphasize the last question. I want to teach my kids to be empathetic little humans as I believe it creatives string leaders, good friends, and trusting partners. I do not feel Paul Ryan, John Kelley, and Donald Trump have strive to be at this level of understanding with the American people. Most of the current White House administration favors the wealthy and sees people struggling as being lazy or deserving of their problems. They do not welcome immigrants from "shit-hole" countries, also known as, mostly brown countries. They don't blink when deciding to remove health insurance for poor children. They see no moral issue taking rights away from an individual because their sexuality or gender.

Empathy is “seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another.”

Children are very impressionable. I fear if we do not change the ideology inside the white house soon it will spread hate through most of the world. I try not to blame the voters directly. I think they have been lied to, tricked, and their party of conservative values have been changed right under them. It goes against every fiber of me to imagine voting for Trump and people in his cabinet. I will be honest, I don't get it. I was raised to love my neighbor. To help those in need. To stockpile friends not guns.
My major concern is how with this infected White House effect my children. Will they become numb to violence and name calling because of our Twitter President? Will they think it is okay to lie over and over again? Is it is okay to drag someone through the mud because you don't like them?
I apologize this not a very cheerful post.
This Presidents Day I encourage you ,individuals or as parents, to write a letter to a local/national leader leader that you feel has forgot about empathy and lost their compassion. Tell them a story about yourself, neighbor, or friend. Ask them to think of you when drafting laws and choosing who to support. Beg them to think of the people that they work for. And if they don't.... Tell them you will fight to get them voted out and replaced with someone who will.
